Israel Bombs Iraq, Boeing 777 Enters Service
June 7, 1981 – Israeli F-16A fighters, escorted by F-15A’s, bombed and heavily damaged the French built Osiris class nuclear reactor near Osirak, Iraq. Israeli intelligence believed that this reactor’s purpose was to produce weapons grade plutonium to advance Iraq’s nuclear weapons program. The strike mission, codenamed Operation Opera (also known as Operation Babylon and Operation Ofra) succeeded in destroying the site’s operational capabilities prior to it going into service. The strike left 11 dead on the ground while all 14 aircraft involved returned with no damage and no Israeli casualties.

It flew it’s maiden flight nearly a year earlier on June 12, 1994 and entered commercial passenger service on this day in 1995.
