June 15, 1864 – Arlington National Cemetery is established as a military cemetery on the estate
formerly owned by Robert E. Lee’s wife, Mary Ann Custis Lee, a descendant of Matha Washington, wife of George Washington. Military dead from all of the nation’s wars are interred in Arlington’s hallowed grounds, from the Revolutionary War through the current conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. The land sits within Arlington County, Virginia, directly across the Potomac River from Washington, DC.
