American Volunteer Group P-40B TomahawkQ:  The P-40B Tomahawk IIa was perhaps most made famous in its use by the American Volunteer Group, better known as the “Flying Tigers”.  What engine make and model powered the Curtiss P-40B Kittyhawk/Tomahawk and how much horsepower did it generate?

ANSWER: The powerplant used in the P-40B was the Allison V-1710-33 liquid-cooled V-12 engine which produced 1,090 horsepower.

The original P-36 model and later converted to P-40 Warhawk,USA and Kittyhawk for Europe used a Alllison V-1710-33 1040hp. The P-40N model used a 1360hp V-1710-81 engine. Production ended in December 1944.
