Who are the militia? Are they not ourselves?

“Who are the militia? Are they not ourselves? It is feared, then, that we shall turn our arms each man against his own bosom. Congress have no power to disarm the militia. Their swords, and every other terrible implement of the soldier, are the birthright of an American. …[T]he unlimited power of the sword is not in the hands of either the federal or state governments, but, where I trust in God it will ever remain, in the hands of the people.”

-A Pennsylvanian, The Pennsylvania Gazette, 20 February 1788

Apollo Airborne with Janelle Elms

We all get fluttery and just a little silly when we meet famous people. Apollo Airborne took those butterflies and set them free when meeting In Line Behind Me & OSI Rock Stars creater Janelle Elms.  After spending a night with great food, great drinks, and great company Apollo Airborne has this to say:

“Truly a once in a lifetime event… I felt like I was visiting royalty!” Apollo Airborne Commented.

“I can’t believe he picked her over a redhead” Janelle Elms stated upon hearing news of Apollo Airborne’s date with Jesse Phillips.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen… ummmm… YAY!

I have been a fan of the Transformers ever since the mid-80s when I was in middle school and they were first introduced as action figures and a half hour cartoon television series.  I loved the concept and the realization of that concept.  Remember how all the Autobots became relatively benign vehicles while the Decepticons always seemed to be much more dangerous – Megatron became a gun for goodness sake!

When the movie “Transformers” was released in 2007 I was there on openning day.  I remember the end of the battle that pitted A-10 Thunderbolt IIs and an AC-130 gunship against Skorponok.  I turned to my wife with an ear to ear grin on my face and whispered “this is fun!”.  The rest of the movie was just as much of a pleasure to this grown fan of a toy from his childhood come to life on the big screen (even if Megatron isn’t a gun anymore).

Now the trailer for the much anticipated sequel, “Transformers:  Revenge of the Fallen“ has been released and I could not be more pumped!  Have a look and see what you think.

Apollo Airborne and I…

Apollo Airborne and Jesse Phillips

So, my friend Louise set me up on a blind date this week.  Normally I would never have gone, but I was intrigued.  Apollo and I met at a rather delightful little restaurant in Renton, Washington.  He was more than just a typical guy, let me tell you.  As debonair and dashing as James Bond, but with better glasses.  He was quite the gentleman, and even though we were interrupted by Ninjas attempting to assassinate him before dessert, it was a lovely time.

I found Apollo to be the strong silent type (which every woman loves) with a knack for making me smile.  Of course, what girl wouldn’t be attracted to a three inch tall army man who rescued her from killer Ninjas?  My hope is that this first date turns into a second.  Thanks, Louise for setting me up on a blind date.   And thanks so much for dinner, Apollo.  You were wonderful.
-Jesse

P.S.  (He’s also a pretty good kisser…)

“Inglourious Basterds” – A Tarantino Take on WWII

While I am withholding judgement on this film until more is revealed about it, I am not optimistic about the combination of Quentin Tarantino, Brad Pitt and World War II.  It should definitely be noted that the film IS NOT based upon true events other than the overall World War II setting.  The entire story and characters are fictional.

Premise:  During World War II a group of Jewish-American soldiers known as “The Basterds” are chosen specifically to spread fear throughout the Third Reich by scalping and brutally killing Nazis. The Basterds soon cross paths with a French-Jewish teenage girl who runs a movie theater in Paris which is targeted by the soldiers.

A film critic has said that Quentin Tarantino’s new war movie, Inglourious Basterds, can turn out to be a gift for anti-Nazi viewers, as it has so much of violence against the Nazis.  Harry Knowles, who visited the German set of the Harvey Weinstein-produced picture, has revealed that the picture shows hundreds of Nazis being executed in the most gruesome ways possible.

Dogfight: F-16 Falcon vs. F-14 Tomcat

Always vigilant for cool videos, I found this gem this morning and thought I’d share.  In this video the F-16s are playing the aggressor role to train and evaluate the pilots of the F-14s at the US Navy’s Top Gun School.  Now that the Tomcat is retired this matchup will only be seen if the US and our allies ever end up in a shooting war with Iran.  In that case it will be the Iranian F-14s as adversaries against our F-16s, in essence a reversal of roles.  I hope these two mighty planes never truly come to blows, but it is fun to watch them in mock combat.

In Line Behind Me!

The idea is a simple way to show you care: Buy coffee for the stranger behind you in the espresso line.

That’s what a Federal Way church is asking its members to do.

The coffee campaign by LifeWay Church is a new twist on reaching out to strangers, sometimes called random acts of kindness. The general concept was popularized several years ago by the novel and movie “Pay It Forward.”

“You need to think about other people,” said church member Janelle Elms, who created the coffee program called In Line Behind Me. “We also hope they turn around and realize there’s someone in line behind them.”

Thomas Jefferson Quote

“We must not let our rulers load us with perpetual debt.”

-Thomas Jefferson, letter to Samuel Kercheval, 12 July 1816

I found this quick quote to be especially relevant given the ‘Economic Stimulus Bill’ currently in debate in the US Senate which carries a price tag currently in excess of $900 Billion ($900,000,000,000).  Yes, that is a nine with eleven zeros after it – an enormous mountain of debt that the current liberal leadership wishes to saddle us and our children with.

Benjamin Franklin Quote

“Strive to be the greatest man in your country, and you may be disappointed. Strive to be the best and you may succeed: he may well win the race that runs by himself.”

This Day in History: General MacArthur Returns

Gen. Douglas MacArthur and staff wade ashore

February 5, 1945General Douglas MacArthur makes good on his word and returns to Manila, Philippines.  In March 1942, as Japanese forces tightened their grip on the Philippines, Gen. MacArthur obeyed the orders of President Roosevelt and relocated his command from the island fortress of Corregidor Dead Snow trailer to Melbourne, Australia.  Along with his wife, son and select staff he left the Philippines aboard PT 41.  Upon his arrival in Australia, MacArthur stated famously “I came through and I shall return.“  On this day, two and a half years later, he fulfilled his promise.
