WAAAM Saves Evergreen Flying Service Original Hanger Doors!

Evergreen Hanger Doors

- Apollo Airborne with Scale Model of the Evergreen Flying Service hanger doors and the real doors in the background.

Founded in 1946 — and home to the Northwest Antique Airplane Club (NWAAC) and the Evergreen Fly-In since 1964 the Evergreen Flying Service closed forever in mid-July 2006.

Since 1946, Evergreen has been a place where a flyer could stop for small town hospitality, kids could earn flight time washing planes, students could learn to fly in taildraggers or contemporary planes. Until the flight school closed recently, Wally Olsen’s original training fleet included several 1946 T-Crafts and a Cub — and folks were welcome to wander around, poke a nose into an open hangar and say hello.

A multi-use business park — sporting with airport design cues — will replace one of the last, great, old airports in the Vancouver-Portland area. Somehow, that just don’t seem right…

Due to great effort by volunteers, the original hanger doors from Evergreen Flying Service were saved and are now on permanent view at the Western Antique Aeroplane & Automobile Museum (WAAAM).

Nestled in the Hood River valley along the Columbia river you will find the opportunity to step back in time and see life as it was in the era of early flight and transportation. The Western Antique Aeroplane & Automobile Museum (WAAAM) is a living museum dedicated to preserving transportation’s golden past. WAAAM honors the memory of early aviators from the first and second war, barnstormers, air mail and early transportation.

Apollo Airborne with Janelle Elms

We all get fluttery and just a little silly when we meet famous people. Apollo Airborne took those butterflies and set them free when meeting In Line Behind Me & OSI Rock Stars creater Janelle Elms.  After spending a night with great food, great drinks, and great company Apollo Airborne has this to say:

“Truly a once in a lifetime event… I felt like I was visiting royalty!” Apollo Airborne Commented.

“I can’t believe he picked her over a redhead” Janelle Elms stated upon hearing news of Apollo Airborne’s date with Jesse Phillips.

Apollo Airborne and I…

Apollo Airborne and Jesse Phillips

So, my friend Louise set me up on a blind date this week.  Normally I would never have gone, but I was intrigued.  Apollo and I met at a rather delightful little restaurant in Renton, Washington.  He was more than just a typical guy, let me tell you.  As debonair and dashing as James Bond, but with better glasses.  He was quite the gentleman, and even though we were interrupted by Ninjas attempting to assassinate him before dessert, it was a lovely time.

I found Apollo to be the strong silent type (which every woman loves) with a knack for making me smile.  Of course, what girl wouldn’t be attracted to a three inch tall army man who rescued her from killer Ninjas?  My hope is that this first date turns into a second.  Thanks, Louise for setting me up on a blind date.   And thanks so much for dinner, Apollo.  You were wonderful.
-Jesse

P.S.  (He’s also a pretty good kisser…)

Bull Run Bridge: Manassas Battlefield Park

Last week Tommy & I visited the Manassas Battlefield National Park. This bridge crosses Bull Run Creek and was in place during both civil war battles (1st and 2nd Manassas/Bull Run). A very cool place indeed!
